1979년, 미 항공우주국의 우주탐사선 보이저호가 목성에 도착하였을 때, 우리들은 숨을 쉴 수 없었답니다. 그 이전까지 어떤 인류에게도 존재를 드러내지 않았던 목성의 아름다움과 그 행성들을 처음으로 관찰할 수 있었습니다.

이 단원에서는 17세기 갈릴레오가 목성의 위성을 망원경으로 관찰한 것을 재현하며 우주탐사를 시작합니다. 비교를 위해 지구의 달을 먼저 학습한 후 목성의 위성을 관찰하고 기록하며 현대 천문학의 기원에 대해 탐구해 봅니다. 학생들은 목성과 보이저호가 발견한 목성의 위성들을 크기로 비교해보며 체험하고, 크레이터가 어떻게 형성되는지 실험해 봅니다.

활동학습에서 학생들은 팀별로 과학자들이 목성의 위성 탐험을 위해 일반 물질들로 기지를 건설하게 됩니다. 목성과 그 위성의 특징과 사진들을 학생들에게 제공하여 학습을 돕도록 합니다.
