우블렉: 과학자들은 무엇을 할까?’는 가장 인기높은 젬스 시리즈 중의 하나로 어린이들 모두를 재미있는 과학자로 변신시켜 놓습니다. 우블렉은 녹색 축축한 물질(실제로는 옥수수녹말, 물과 식용색소의 혼합물임)로 책에서는 외계에서 왔다고 하며, 학생들의 자발적인 토론을 유도하기 위하여 우블렉에 대한 설명은 기술되어 있지 않습니다.

첫번째 활동학습에서 학생들은 연구팀별로 우블렉이 무엇인지 가정하고 실험하며 물질의 특성을 표현에 관한 과학용어 사용을 습득하게 됩니다. 두번째 활동학습에서는 실험의 결과에 대해 학급 전체가 토론하게 됩니다. 그리고 학생들은 과학자가 되어 우블렉 별에 착륙할 수 있는 우주선을 디자인합니다. 마지막 활동학습에서는 학생들이 우블렉 분석에 사용한 방법들을 화성행 바이킹 우주선을 연구한 실제 과학자들의 방법과 비교하게 됩니다.

이 책은 활동체험학습 뿐만이 아니라 과학자들의 실제 연구를 살펴볼 수 있는 좋은 기회를 제공하며, 미국 항공우주국(NASA)와 미국 과학교사협의회(NSTA)에서 이 책을 추천하고 있습니다.
